Glenn Barkley

“Glenn Barkley embodies the idea of the ceramicist as a ‘maker of things’. He relishes in the tactility of clay in an infectious and engaging way - we as viewers may find it impossible to keep our hands off. “ Simon Gregg, Curator, Gippsland Art Gallery, 2016

“there is some ineffable sense of generosity in his work” Tai Mitsuji, Art Almanac, 2018

Glenn Barkley incorporates his interest in pop culture, horticulture, and historical ceramic traditions in his intensely patterned ceramic vessels, collage work and monumental circular wall works.

The artist states that his practice “has distinct conceptual and formal relationships with English and European porcelain, folk art traditions, production and studio pottery of the twentieth century. Many of these traditions had observation of the natural world incorporated in their making.” His expressive work echoes this in his inclusion of plant forms alongside textual and other elements, all of which proudly retain the mark of the maker.

Glenn Barkley (born 1972) is an artist, curator, writer and gardener based in Sydney and Berry, NSW. He is Co-founder and Co-director of The Curators Department, Sydney and kil.n.it experimental ceramics studio in Glebe, Sydney.

Barkley has written extensively on Australian art and culture and held the position of Senior Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) in Sydney from 2008-2014. His areas of interest and knowledge are diverse, including ceramic history, exhibition and theory; artist books and ephemera; outsider art and other marginal art forms as well as horticulture. Recent curatorial projects include An idea needing to be made: contemporary ceramics at Heide Museum of Modern Art, Melbourne, 2019.

His work has been included in a number of recent public exhibitions including Sidney Myer Fund Australian Ceramic Award Exhibition, Shepparton Art Museum, Victoria, 2017; Earth & Fire, QUT Art Museum, Brisbane 2017; Weird Ceramic, Gippsland Art Gallery, Victoria, 2016; and Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art: Magic Object, Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide, 2016. He curated the Australian Ceramics Association 2016 Biennale, overundersidewaysdown at Manly Regional Gallery and his work is held in a number of public and private collections in Australia and the USA.
