Helen Wright
‘A coalition of the terms ‘wander’ and ‘wonder’ is perhaps the key adhesive holding this matter together.’ Simon Gregg, Helen Wright - Navigating the Edge of Reason, Curator, Gippsland Art Gallery, 2016
Helen Wright, through subtlety of technique and acute observation to detail, creates dystopian architectures and labyrinthine-structures that describe the fragile interactions between humanity and the natural world. Silhouetted figures playfully inhabit her teetering landscapes, their presence dwarfed by the overwhelming sense of imbalance and isolation.
Born in Sydney in 1956, Wright completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Tasmanian School of Art between 1977 and 1979. The following year she undertook a Post Graduate Diploma of Visual Arts at the Alexander Mackie School, Sydney and in 1986 began a Master of Fine Arts at the Tasmanian School of Art, Hobart. She was a founding member of the Chameleon Studios and Contemporary Art Space, Hobart and in 1989 she was artist-in-residence at the Verdaccio Studio, Italy. Wright has achieved significant recognition for her work and has been awarded the 2009 Burnie Print Prize and the 2011 Hutchins Award for works on paper.
Wright's work is included in the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria, Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery and the Art Gallery of South Australia, as well as numerous public and private collections. She currently lives and works in Tasmania.
